Farm to School

Farm to School in the Adirondacks

Farm to School connects Adirondack farms with local schools, bringing fresh, locally grown food into cafeterias while giving students hands-on opportunities to learn about agriculture, nutrition, and their local food system. These efforts support farmers, strengthen communities, and help students build lifelong healthy habits.

Why it Matters
Supports Adirondack farmers and local food producers
Expands access to fresh, healthy food for students
Strengthens the regional economy
Connects students to where their food comes from
Programs and Activities

Farm to School efforts in the Adirondacks are supported through a variety of programs and partnerships:

  • Ag in the Classroom brings agriculture into schools through hands-on, curriculum-based learning that teaches students about farming, food systems, and nutrition.

  • Harvest of the Month highlights seasonal produce, giving students a chance to taste, learn about, and celebrate locally grown foods.

  • Power of Produce (POP) Club engages youth through hands-on activities about local fruits and veggies. Kids who participate in a POP Club activity (such as a scavenger hunt, matching game, or zucchini boat contest) receive $5 to purchase their very own local produce from vendors at the market.

Get in touch with your local Cornell Cooperative Extension to find out more about available activities using this directory page.
