Plattsburgh City Schools now saves over $100,000 a year by making pizza from scratch instead of buying pre-made frozen pizzas. By transitioning to a food service program that focuses on cooking from scratch and local ingredients, the food service team at Plattsburgh City Schools is supporting local farmers and saving taxpayers money while increasing the number of students eating healthy meals every day.
Under the direction of Julie Holbrook and Jocelyn Lopez, they have shifted from frozen pre-packaged foods to nourishing meals made from scratch with local veggies, fruit, dairy products, meat, and grains. Students are excited about the fresher, tastier options now available to them, and local farms benefit from the added wholesale sales throughout the school year.
