SUMMARY:Saranac Lake Fall/Winter Farmers' Market
DESCRIPTION:The AuSable Valley Grange Farmers’ Markets are the only “producer-only” farmers’ markets in the eastern Adirondacks. At “producer-only” markets\, the vendors can sell only items that they or their employees produce. Vendors cannot buy in bulk and then proceed to resell to you. Producer-only markets not only insure integrity for you\, the consumer\, but also provide an environment that encourages local farmers and artisans to expand and diversify their production. Our farmers all follow organic or sustainable production practices. \nThe 2018 fall/winter markets occur every Saturday from October 10th through December 22nd.

SUMMARY:Adirondack Farm to School Initiative "Celebrating our Farmers" Farm to School Benefit Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Join the Adirondack Farm to School Initiative for a benefit dinner with the theme\, “Celebrating our Farmers.” We will be gathering at Tucker Farms in Gabriels\, NY for a very special dinner on a long table in the Corn Maze Barn! Guest speakers will include area farmers and Assemblyman Billy Jones. Hayrides and the corn maze will be open for your enjoyment. Tickets are $65 each and benefit the Adirondack Farm to School Initiative. \nThe Adirondack Farm to School Initiative works with schools and communities to rebuild a healthy food system in the Adirondacks. Our goal is to enrich children’s bodies and minds while supporting local economies\, bringing local food into school cafeterias and creating hands-on learning activities through school gardens\, farm visits\, and integration of food related education into the regular classroom curriculum. \nWe believe that through growing\, harvesting\, and preparing nutritious foods\, children gain confidence\, develop critical thinking skills\, feel a sense of power over their own health\, and can impact family purchasing\, cooking\, and eating patterns.

SUMMARY:FreshFoodNY Mobile App Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Adirondack Harvest\, a program of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Essex County\, will offer a presentation on the new FreshFoodNY Mobile App initiative by Jacqueline Lachevre\, Systems Consultant with Crave Food Systems on April 17 at 7 p.m. at the Warren County Soil & Water District Office on Schroon River Road in Warrensburgh\, NY. \nThe Farmers Market Federation of NY has partnered with Crave Food Systems to bring farmers an opportunity that will create new access to their business and drive new customers to farmers markets\, encouraging them to invest their food dollars in local businesses. \nFreshFoodNY is a virtual farmers market where customers can connect with farmers through the convenience of an online connection\, pre-order items\, pay and then pick up at the farmers market. The app helps farmers meet new customers\, better service existing ones and allows vendors to show up at the market with products already sold. \nThe FreshFoodNY app requires little maintenance\, but has tremendous opportunity to positively impact a farmer’s business. If you’re interested in testing out the app\, please come to the presentation or let me know promptly and I’ll pass along your information to Jacqueline\, who has offered to help farmers set up their profiles. Once there are a critical number of farmers enrolled in the app within a market\, they will be able to begin a promotional campaign targeting our area and drive customer traffic to the market on the FreshFoodNY app. The app can also help farmers who not only attend markets but are involved with other forms of direct marketing such as farm stands\, stores\, etc. \nTo review\, the goal of the state-wide initiative is to increase foot traffic at the markets and business for our New York producers by introducing them to FreshFoodNY. The app is a virtual farmers market that allows consumers to pre-order from vendors\, and pick up their orders at the farmers market\, at no cost to the vendor or the market. By making local food available online\, the app will enhance the current farmers market presence and drive new consumers into the market – prompting them to invest their food dollars in our local producers. \nPlease contact Teresa Whalen\, Adirondack Harvest Board President and Southern Chapter Representative\, either by email at taawhalen@yahoo.com\, or phone at 518-466-5497 if you are able to attend the presentation. Farmers from throughout the Adirondack region are welcome.

SUMMARY:Permaculture Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Over the past six seasons Dani Baker\, co-owner of Cross Island Farms\, has developed just under an acre of her certified organic farm as a multi-functional edible forest garden encompassing numerous permaculture principles and practices.  Join her as she describes the process of planning and planting over 300 cultivars of edible fruits\, nuts\, berries\, and other edibles\, both native and uncommon. \nLearn of the multitude of factors considered in deciding where and with what to plant the seven permaculture layers she has incorporated and identify a large variety of supportive plants integrated into the landscape.  Attendees will have an opportunity to sample edible fruits\, flowers\, greens and herbs in season and go home with a potted plant to begin or add to their own garden. \nThis workshop should be of interest to homeowners and back yard gardeners who wish to incorporate perennial edibles into their landscapes as well as farmers who are interested in developing additional income streams. For the past 3 years the general public has been offered U-pick opportunities by appointment in the garden\, and its herbs and berries have been appreciated by local high end chefs.   The garden has been a site for educational workshops (like this one)\, permaculture tours\, and benefits for local not-for-profits.  Future plans include offering the garden for rent for weddings and other special events\, and developing a certified organic perennial nursery operation. \nThe Edible Forest Garden is the latest addition to Cross Island Farms’ diversified operation.  Located on 102 acres\, this certified organic farm includes season extension hoop houses\, annual vegetable gardens\, rotationally grazed beef cattle\, meat goats\, heritage breed pigs\, ducks\, and chickens\, and renewable wind and solar power. Educational organic tours\, workshops\, and on-farm rustic camping round out its offerings. \nDani Baker is a former psychologist for whom operating an organic farm is her “retirement gig.” As a child she performed most of the landscaping work on the ½ acre surrounding her newly built family home.  As an adult\, she cultivated a small or large vegetable garden whenever she had a piece of land to work.  She became a full time organic farmer when she retired in 2006.  She has acquired her knowledge of permaculture design through reading and workshops including a tour of Martin Crawford’s Edible Forest Garden in Dartington\, England.\, and a recent weekend workshop with Dave Jacke. \nCross Island Farms is located on Wellesley Island in Jefferson County\, NY.  It is easily accessed from the North via Routes 37 and 12\, and from the South via I-81.  Take I-81 across the first span of the 1000 Island Bridge and take exit 51.  Turn right at the end of the ramp. Turn right at the stop sign.  Turn right onto Cross Island Road.  The garden is 7/8 mile down this road on the left.  Park on the roadside. Plan to arrive at 12:45 to register at the garden gate. For more information\, please call Cross Island Farms at 315-482-3663 or Adirondack Harvest at 518-962-4810 x (409). \nIf you are interested in carpooling from the Essex County area please contact Adirondack Harvest!
