SUMMARY:Abundance and Scarcity: The Tangled Web of Food Systems
DESCRIPTION:Food systems can have a negative or positive impact on the environment\, our bodies\, our communities and the other sentient creatures we share our earth with. On one hand\, food systems should ensure food security and improved nutrition\, and they can achieve other social\, economic or environmental goals. But there is also the harsh reality of food scarcity and insecurity in our communities. As food consumers\, we each have an opportunity to impact our food system. During this talk you will get to know our Adirondack food system and your role in it. \n\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: Racey Henderson is an entrepreneur and consultant who has her hands in the dirt. Her family owns and runs Reber Rock Farm in Essex\, NY\, a diversified grass-based livestock and maple farm. She is active in local food system advocacy in the Adirondacks\, and is co-founder of a small craft business\, Ndara\, based in the Central African Republic. She has worked for the UN\, the US government and many international non-governmental organizations and is an Essex County Farm Bureau board member. \nThe Winter 2021 Lyceum lectures will be presented via Zoom. You can access them through your computer\, smartphone\, or by dialing in on a regular phone (audio only). You must register IN ADVANCE so we can email you the Zoom link. You can register for the entire series or for an individual lecture. We will record the lectures and make them available later if you can’t watch them live. Click on the button below to register.

SUMMARY:FEED BACK move forward: responding 2020
DESCRIPTION:How do we create a fair food system? How do we build an equitable future for the North Country? And how do we move our region toward stronger and more accessible\, inclusive\, nutritious\, and just systems for everyone? \nThese questions frame our annual summit and bring together community leaders\, business owners\, farmers\, consumers\, healthcare professionals\, educators\, students\, and more to discuss advocacy\, politics\, programs\, and grassroots organizing. Our goal is to bring creative\, scholarly\, and frontline perspectives together into dynamic conversation. This year’s theme reflects the urgency of inequities that 2020 laid bare and the challenges we must meet in 2021.

SUMMARY:St. Lawrence CCE: Pressure Canning Online Class
DESCRIPTION:Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County is offering a live demo from the Harvest Kitchen on Tuesday\, November 3rd 1-3pm. The cost is a sliding scale from $0-30. \n“Pressure canning is an amazing technique to preserve low acid foods such as meat\, beans\, soups and vegetables than cannot be safely preserved with water bath canning. It is a popular method to preserve venison or “tough\,” cuts of meat. Join this class to demystify the process and see the steps in action from beginning to end. With the right tools and knowledge\, this method can be empowering\, not intimidating! The instructor for this live demonstration is Local Food Program Leader and Master Food Preserver Flip Filippi who will film from the Harvest Kitchen at the Extension Learning Farm and share both the scientific reasoning behind pressure canning as well as tips to make this preservation technique a useful skill in your preservation toolbox. The class will also cover the tools needed with a comparison of the various models of pressure canners. There will be time for questions throughout the session.” \nhttp://stlawrence.cce.cornell.edu/events/2020/09/09/pressure-canning-online-class

SUMMARY:Snowy Grocery : a tiny farmers market
DESCRIPTION:It’s kind of spring so that means Snowy Grocery will now occur every Sunday from 10-1 at Sugar House Creamery. We are planning for vendors to be set up outside to allow for ample space and fresh air and all who are able will be asked to park on 9N and walk up the driveway – please dress accordingly. \nProducts and vendors include cheese and milk from Sugar House Creamery plus full availability from the SHC farm store\, pork\, lamb\, beef\, and chicken from Mace Chasm Farm\, an increasing selection of vegetables from Wild Work Farm\, and baked goods from Mona Dubay. \nIn an attempt to ensure the health of customers\, vendors\, and our community at large\, there will be a couple of changes to Snowy Grocery as we know it: \n1) While usually a social affair\, we ask that customers approach the market with efficiency and respect for the NYS guidelines on congregation. Please help us limit the number of bodies at this market by sending just one person from your household when possible. \n2) Furthermore\, we ask that all suggested social distancing protocols be followed. Primarily\, keep six feet between you and anyone else… walking\, talking\, standing in line. Individual vendors will be following industry specific safety guidelines. \nIF YOU ARE SICK OR SELF-QUARANTINING BECAUSE OF POSSIBLE EXPOSURE DO NOT COME TO SNOWY GROCERY! Try to find someone who can shop for you. \nBe kind\, be patient. We’re all in this together.

SUMMARY:Thurman Maple Days
DESCRIPTION:Thurman Maple Days \nMarch 14-15\, 21-22\, 28-29 \nFree. Thurman Maple Days\, will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 14-15\, 21-22\, 28-29\, at several sites within a small radius in the small town of Thurman\, just minutes from downtown Lake George. Maple Days showcases some of Warren County’s largest maple operations\, along with a “sapling” new operation that sprouts new growth each year. These maple farms initiate visitors from near and far to the Adirondack heritage art of turning sap into outstanding maple confections\, from the traditional pancake syrup and maple sugar candies to newer delicacies like maple cream-filled chocolate bonbons\, maple glazed nuts\, cinnamon-infused and bourbon maple syrups and much more. \nEach weekend offers a pancake breakfast from 9 to 1. Visitors self-guide with a passport and map to all four maple farms as well as to open houses at neighboring farms–visit the producer of internationally-awarded goat and sheep cheeses\, a certified tree farm that offers an artisan market with ongoing interactive demonstrations\, and a third farm that produces organic foods. Guests may experience wagon rides to the sugar bush\, see traditional sap collection contrasted with technologically-advanced procedures for reducing sap to syrup in the most energy-efficient way. Talk to the farm hosts about the passion that drives them to pursue their age-old arts. Each farm offers shopping so guests can take home some of the products made. \nVisitors who are able to come to Maple Days on March 14 will have the opportunity to attend the Thurman Maple Sugar Party\, held from 3 to 8 p.m. The party\, now it its 60th year\, features live music\, raffles\, and an extensive buffet\, with all proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society. Read details and download a passport and map at www.VisitThurman.com/maple-days/ \nMore information: Robin Mahler (518) 623-2736 mudstmaple269@gmail.com. This event is made possible\, in part\, by Warren County occupancy tax dollars granted by the Town of Thurman. \nSent from my iPad

SUMMARY:Feed Back: Everyone Eats!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 3rd Annual Food Summit at the Wild Center\nOnline Registration \n2020 Theme: Poverty and Food\nPrevious Food Justice Summit conferences brought together activists\, farmers\, consumers\, and educators to speak about advocacy\, politics\, and grassroots organizing. This year’s summit singles out a particular strand of these previous broad analyses: poverty and food. This theme reflects the urgency about inequalities in our world\, and invites conference participants to work collectively as problem-solvers. We seek to identify obstacles and successful initiatives that address the intersection of poverty and food: activism\, institutional change\, and policy. \nbrought to you by the North Country Food Justice Working Group
